Abstract
Recently, generational conflict has been occurring in various domains of society. However, there is a paucity of literature on the perceptions held by young and old generations toward each other. This study aims to examine these perceptions, as well as views on age integration. This work used the dataset from the ¡°Survey on the Perception regarding Aging Society¡±, which was collected based on a quota sampling method in 15 areas nationwide. A total of 178 respondents in their 20s (young generation) and 70s (old generation) were selected. T-tests and multiple regression were used for statistical analyses. The study found differences in the perception on age integration maintained by young and old age groups, with the degree being lower in the latter group. In terms of the relationship between the image of different generations and the perception on age integration, significant associations were found between the evaluations on the social position of participants in their 20s and age integration (p<.01), in both groups. More positive perceptions on age integration were shown by the young generation who had favorable emotions towards the 20s, and the old generation who expressed positive views towards the 70s. Practical implications of this work, and suggestions for future studies, will be discussed.
